Research Analyst

Job Description

We are seeking a Research Analyst who is responsible for the overall design, development, and scientific implementation of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) research program directed by Dr. Steven Keller and Dr. Sung-Min Cho. The Research Analyst will support Dr. Keller and Dr. Cho in the planning and execution of the experimental studies required for successful completion of the DARPA program. Specific responsibilities will include drafting and submitting animal experimental protocols, conducting large and small animal experiments, purchasing and managing experimental equipment, supervising equipment maintenance, and providing mentorship and training for laboratory post-doctoral fellows, graduate students, technicians, and other laboratory personnel. The Research Analyst will assist with the preparation of results for reporting to the government project sponsor.


DARPA is an agency within the US Department of Defense that seeks to produce transformational innovation. Dr. Keller and Dr. Cho have been awarded a substantial DARPA contract to develop a novel life support platform. This project will combine advanced engineering and the leading edge of clinical medicine to produce a new means of supporting trauma patients. The project team is a unique academic-industry partnership lead by Johns Hopkins University that is comprised of multiple research academic institutions and a leading medical device company. The environment created by this partnership is highly dynamic and will provide unique opportunities for engaging leaders in medicine and technology from across government, academia, and industry. The broader goal of this project is to define the future of critical care medicine and create new life support technology to improve survival for patients suffering from life-threatening organ failure. The Research Analyst role will have a vital leadership role within the project and will work closely with Dr. Keller and Dr. Cho on all facets of the program. This specific role is one that has the opportunity for continued growth and development depending on the interest and goals of the candidate. Ideally, this role will become a foundational position for the laboratory of Dr. Keller and Dr. Cho, with the candidate becoming a partner in their efforts to establish a dynamic research environment that seeks to transform the future of critical care medicine. The ideal candidate will have both a broad research background and an interest in further development of leadership and mentorship skills.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide overall project scientific supervision including development of animal experimental protocols and conduct of research experiments.
  • Utilize advanced scientific knowledge and experience toward specialized scientific research interests. Use advanced knowledge base to formulate research method.
  • Supervise and manage active laboratory animal protocols.
  • Coordinate research and supervise and track overall progress and work closely with administrative core on project implementation.
  • Manage laboratory purchasing including purchasing of equipment, supplies, and overseeing required maintenance of experimental equipment.
  • Assist in the preparing and presentation of results with government research sponsor and coordinate interaction with government project evaluators.
  • Co-author/author publications. Contribute original thoughts, hypotheses, and analysis to write reports, abstracts and manuscripts.
  • Make decisions regarding research projects that may require assessment, revision of objectives, or altering scientific direction; considers resources and lab priorities when making decisions.
  • Assume role as a team member and technical resource on projects across the lab.
  • Provide project analysis as requested and contribute ideas and proposals.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Additional Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Able to analyze and integrate data and assist in the preparation of results for publication and presentation.
  • Self-motivated and comfortable working independently, as a team leader, and as a team member. 


Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in a related science.
  • Six years of related experience, with proven technical knowledge and laboratory experience.
  • Experience in the use of animal models of disease, including both small and large animals, is required for this position.
  • PhD with related research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Related Doctorate (Ph.D. or M.D. or equivalent).
  • Familiarity with physiological data acquisition systems is highly preferred as many of the planned experiments for this project will require intensive data monitoring, acquisition, and review.
  • Experience with data processing using Matlab, R, or Python.
  • Experience in motivating people who may or may not be direct reports to work as a team in harmony with the goals of the project and the organization.

Starting Salary Range: $75,100 - $131,700 Annually ($100,000 targeted; Commensurate with experience) 
Employee group: Full Time 
Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:30am to 5pm
