About the Department

The Department of Computer Science is an academic teaching and research department in the College of Engineering. It is a large and complex unit that encompasses research intensive, teaching intensive and professional activities. It is one of the largest such departments in the nation by the number of faculty and students, and its total budget and size are comparable to some NC State University colleges and divisions.

The organizational unit, the NC State department of computer science external relations office, manages and coordinates all aspects of the department’s alumni and corporate relations efforts including development (fundraising) and ongoing engagement. It informs and influences targeted constituents with a variety of image/brand sensitive news, PR and communications vehicles. And it supports the department’s outreach efforts including strategic student recruitment, Open Houses, and other related events and activities. While working independently to direct these functions for the department, the role works in close coordination with College and University advancement, communications and student services functions to ensure alignment of strategy, processes, and outcomes.

Essential Job Duties

The following duties are associated with the position:
Deliver Career Services for CSC Graduate Students
  • Create a coordinated set of strategies and processes for delivery of career services to CSC graduate students.
  • Develop and implement delivery methods for career development programs, including individual & group sessions, special events, workshops, certification programs, video and/or online training, etc. Engage employers and alumni in the implementation of events and programs.
  • Develop and implement strategies to coach CSC graduate students (including individual & group sessions, special events, certification programs, video and/or online training, etc.) including personal assessments, job search strategies, networking, resume writing, cover letters, follow-up, social media, self-marketing plans, mock interviews, ethics, salary negotiations, visa regulations, etc.
  • Advise Computer Science graduate students on issues including job search strategies, networking, resume writing, cover letters, LinkedIn, interview preparation, job search ethics, salary negotiations.
  • Plan and coordinate special recruitment activities and events such as CSC ePartners Career Fair, Navigating Networking Events, Technical Mock Interview programs, Career Fair & Interview Preparation programs, the Byte Sized Career Convos podcast, Progressive Undergraduate Recruitment Dinner, Student and Alumni panels.
  • Act as a resource to Computer Science graduate students seeking internships and full-time jobs who have questions regarding the recruitment process.
  • Manage day-to-day access and usage of Graduate Career Services suite, including interview rooms and drop-in office.
  • Supervise and train hourly and temp employees who assist with career services.
  • Serve as a point of contact for students and employers related to resume software.
  • Attend meetings with and provide career advising and related content to the Cybersecurity Scholarship for Service student cohort.
  • Work with University Career Development Center to ensure that campus interviews run smoothly.
Support Department Processes & Events
  • Carry out surveys and exit interviews of graduate students regarding internship and post graduate employment, analyze the responses, and develop annual employment reports.
  • Work with Computer Science leadership to assist in the recruitment of graduate students as required and appropriate.
  • Serve as a member of the Computer Science staff and actively support all departmental events and activities including Open Houses, diploma ceremonies, etc.
  • Support Computer Science student organizations in collaborations with ePartners for appropriate programs.
  • Coordinate with the CSC Graduate Student Association to provide events related to career development and to generate community support amongst graduate students.
Serve as Liaison with Employers and Alumni
  • Work with the CSC Associate Director of External and Corporate Relations to develop a tiered-service strategy for providing premier service for ePartners (companies with tangible partnership with department), while supporting and building relationships with all current & potential employers of CSC graduate students.
  • Implement that strategy by leveraging existing relationships with companies that recruit at NC State University and by developing relationships with potential recruiting companies.
  • Develop relationships with CSC alumni that will lead to internship and employment opportunities for CSC graduate students.
  • Serve as the primary liaison for employers who seek to employ CSC graduate students.
  • Support relationships with all current and potential employers of Computer Science graduate students through execution of a variety of engagement events and programs.
  • Respond to emails and phone inquiries from current and prospective employers.
  • Represent Computer Science Graduate Careers Services by making presentations to current and potential industry partners, the Strategic Advisory Board, and other such groups and organizations.

Minimum Education and Experience

Master’s Degree. Needs strong oral and written communication skills, and the ability to interact easily with others. Requires a minimum of 5 years of related professional experience providing career assistance to college students.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in counseling or higher education
  • Minimum of 7 years of related experience working with students;
  • Strong project management, time management, and organizational skills.
