Job Summary


 

This is a short-term, benefits-eligible, full-time one-year-only teaching opportunity for academic year 24/25 beginning August 2024.

The successful candidate will teach a 5/5 course load, with at least 3 of those being college composition. The successful candidate will also hold academic support hours, mentor students, and contribute to the academic mission of the Department by engaging in professional growth activities and serving on Department, College, and District committees.

We seek applicants who have experience and training in Rhetoric and Composition scholarship and pedagogy. The ideal candidate should be able to speak to how their instructional practices leverage the experiences and strengths of our students, especially students of color. Ideally, those instructional practices will address the curricular and pedagogical needs of first-generation and diverse student populations and experience working across disciplinary boundaries. The candidate will also demonstrate a commitment to student-centered approaches in both instruction and service.

Student-centered approaches include integrating student support resources through curricular and co-curricular instructional practices; therefore, ideal candidates should demonstrate a commitment to engaging students in support services through in-class activities, assignments, and extracurricular opportunities.

Essential Functions

 
  • Instructs a diverse population of students in classroom and lab settings.
  • Develops written syllabi/course outlines and course materials; assesses student knowledge of subject matter and prepares and grades exams; maintains academic support hours to assist and advise students.
  • Engages in the academic life of the college by participating in district-wide and campus committees and activities.
  • Develops and enhances knowledge of subject matter taught and individual training skills required to remain current with new trends and developments in the field and to promote the scholarship of teaching and learning through attendance at conferences, courses, seminars, and/or workshops.

Minimum Qualifications


 

For Academic Disciplines: The Academic Teaching Fields require the following from an accredited college or university:

 


A Master’s degree or higher with 18 graduate semester hours in the teaching field or a Master’s degree or higher in the teaching field is required.

Desired Qualifications


 

A. Master's or PhD in English, Literature, Composition/Rhetoric, Humanities, TESOL or related field.

B. Experience teaching college-level composition

C. Experience teaching accelerated, co-requisite courses

D. Demonstrated commitment to leveraging the experiences and strengths of students, especially students of color, through instructional practices (culturally sustaining pedagogies, culturally relevant texts, text-based writing, alternative assessments)

F. Experience with integrating student support resources into courses

G. Demonstrated commitment to department, college, and disciplinary service

H. Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development
