We are seeking a self-motivated Staff Accountant to help us prepare bank account reconciliations, perform various accounting and reconciliation functions involving APL benefit programs, and participate in other General Accounting functions such as cost processing, journal entries, and general ledger maintenance in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
We are looking for someone with a focus on partnering, who is detail oriented with a continuous eye on improvement and has excellent organizational, prioritization and interpersonal skills. Also important to success is maintaining accuracy in a fast-paced environment.
As a Staff Accountant...
- Your primary responsibility will be completing monthly processing and balancing for APL’s medical benefits and other staff and retiree health and welfare plans in support of APL benefits funding. Your solution-centric approach and flexibility will be instrumental in offering ideas to improve benefit program practices and adapt as requirements change and/or evolve.
- You will prepare bank account reconciliations and investigate, analyze, advance, and resolve reconciling differences for APL’s operating bank accounts, enabling effective cash management of APL business operations. Your attention to detail, organization, and prioritization skills will come into play while you track and maintain internal and regulatory controls to ensure data quality via data analysis and reports.
- We expect you to prepare internal and external audit documentation. Your solution-oriented approach will be instrumental in offering ideas to improve information management activities affecting internal policy and external regulatory controls.
- You will perform other staff accountant duties as assigned, including General Ledger account reconciliations, journal entry preparation, cost processing support, JHU data requests, and Defense Contract Audit Agency (DCAA) audit requests.

Qualifications
You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...
- Possess a BS in Accounting, Finance, or other Business related field with a strong academic background in Accounting
- Are excellent at multitasking, extracting data needs, prioritizing assignments, communicating progress, and meeting deadlines
- Show outstanding attention to detail and strong organizational skills
- Exhibit a self-starter mentality, shows extraordinary initiative, and analyzes and resolves challenges independently and in a team-based setting
- Are able to collaboratively perform in a dynamic and fast-paced environment
- Demonstrate strong interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to work with all levels of staff and vendors
- Have a strong desire to learn and can easily adapt to changing environments
- Show a proficiency in working with Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and Adobe
You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you...
- Have at least 2 years of experience in Accounting
- Are a certified public accountant (CPA)
- Have experience with preparing complex account reconciliations, researching data anomalies, and analyzing financial data
- Have experience working in an Oracle accounting system environment (i.e., Oracle Projects and General Ledger) and/or other APL computer systems
- Have experience in a Department of Defense (DoD) or Government contracting environment

The referenced pay range is based on JHU APL’s good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level with consideration for internal parity. For salaried employees scheduled to work less than 40 hours per week, annual salary will be prorated based on the number of hours worked. APL may offer bonuses or other forms of compensation per internal policy and/or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be provided in the form of a sign-on bonus, relocation benefits, locality allowance or discretionary payments for exceptional performance. APL provides eligible staff with a comprehensive benefits package including retirement plans, paid time off, medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short-term disability, long-term disability, flexible spending accounts, education assistance, and training and development. $52,600 Annually
Maximum Rate
$142,000 Annually
