Job Description
Under the supervision of the Pulmonary Function Manager, the Pulmonary Function Access Specialist is responsible for front-office and back-office functions and other duties as assigned. Duties include customer service, registration, appointment scheduling, insurance verification, and answering multiple telephone lines with accuracy and clarity with emphasis placed on quality Customer Service. Adheres to the established scheduling protocols and telephone scripting and behavioral standards. Interviews customer via telephone to obtain demographic and financial information necessary to secure patient account.
Completes registration for new or previously registered patients, timely and accurately. Registers bulk accounts as needed. Verifies insurance eligibility for outpatient services on all Third Party Payers. Utilizes various automated eligibility systems to obtain basic eligibility information. Communicates clearly and effectively with patient/clinic staff when services are deemed unauthorized. Advises patient of clinic deposit requirements based upon UCSD Medical Group Financial Policy. Collects co-pays etc. Researches and responds to patient basic billing inquiries, assists with resolution of minor billing problems.
Refers patient to appropriate agency/resource for financial assistance. Refers patient to alternate source of healthcare when appropriate. Maintains workstation in an organized manner as outlines by management to facilitate efficient and effective retrieval of information. Reads and adheres to policy changes within Registration and Scheduling. Attends and actively participates in staff meetings, sharing information and ideas with co-workers to maintain and environment conducive to learning and supports cohesive team atmosphere. Assist with reprocessing of equipment of the Pulmonary Function and Exercise Labs as necessary.Must be able to work various hours and locations based on business needs.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSThree (3) years of directly related experience in a large complex healthcare or clinic setting; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Demonstrated experience with scheduling appointments. Knowledge of general office operations and principles.
Demonstrated ability to determine the importance of calls and proper area of referral.
Prior experience with Epic or related systems.
Thorough knowledge and familiarity with various insurance types and the authorization process.
Effective interpersonal skills and ability to effectively communicate in a professional manner, both in person and by telephone when dealing with diverse groups of people.
Outstanding communication skills, both interpersonal oral and written, including strong writing and editing skills for the preparation of grammatically correct, logical and concise correspondence.
Ability to exercise judgment and make decisions with regard to patient needs. Ability to work independently with limited supervision. Ability to analyze situations and develop options and recommendations.
Possess strong computer skills and be the ability to work between multiple systems during calls. Proficient with MS Office: Outlook, Word, Excel
- Medical terminology training and/or certificate.
- Bilingual: English/Spanish.
- Experience with patient relations, a concierge program, and/or patient population.
- Familiar with UCSD Health policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of UCSD Medical Center systems (Epic, Web paging)
- Must be able to work various hours and locations based on business needs.
- Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.
Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $68,883 - $68,883 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $32.99 - $32.99
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs.
