About the Department

The Department of Crop and Soil Sciences encompasses diverse disciplines in research and teaching. The department’s mission is to develop future leaders in crop, soil, and environmental sciences, improve crop plants and products, and devise effective and sustainable crop production systems and soil management techniques in both agriculture and urban settings. Additionally, we aim to disseminate knowledge in crop, soil, and environmental sciences for the benefit of users and producers of food, feed, turf, biofuels, and fiber in North Carolina, across the nation, and around the world.

Essential Job Duties

This position will provide support for research, extension, and educational activities associated with the aquatic and noncropland weed management programs.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Evaluate sites, communicate with cooperating landowners, county extension personnel, and others; plan and schedule day-to-day field operations based on project objectives.
  • Assist in the planning of experiments and extension demonstrations, including evaluating the feasibility of the design and methods used to achieve the desired goals. 
  • Responsible for scheduling studies and establishing field plots to ensure objectives are met; conduct all operations to utilize time, personnel, equipment, and supplies in the most effective and efficient manner.
  • Perform routine operation and maintenance of boats.
  • Collect and record data from field, greenhouse, laboratory, and controlled environment chamber experiments.
  • Conduct field, greenhouse, and lab experiments and demonstrations from which specific management strategies can be developed.
  • Establish and manage research plots, perform data collection and entry, conduct statistical analysis, and prepare reports. Design and maintain equipment as necessary.
  • Maintain the laboratory in accordance with safety protocols, including the proper storage of supplies and chemicals. Maintain chemical inventories and order supplies as needed.
  • Coordinate the use of laboratory facilities with other project leaders and graduate students.
  • Oversee routine operations and maintenance of the greenhouse, ensuring the general cleanliness of work areas and greenhouse benches, proper equipment storage, and the culturing of algae and vascular plants used in teaching and research.
  • Maintain and service all vehicles, boats, and other equipment used in the field and lab.
  • Assist in the preparation of educational materials for lectures, extension meetings, agent training, conferences, and other meetings.
  • Train part-time personnel as needed.

Minimum Experience/Education

Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Operational knowledge of GIS software.
  • Operational knowledge of ARM software.
  • Knowledge of boating related equipment and systems including Lowrance hydroacoustic systems.
  • Knowledge of terrestrial herbicide application equipment.
  • Ability to identify by sight common aquatic plants of North Carolina and to discover the identity of uncommon aquatic plants through botanical keys.
  • Ability to collect and propagate these plants for greenhouse trials.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience directly related to aquatic plant management.
  • Experience operating boats.

Required License or Certification

  • A valid driver’s license is required for travel. An NC driver’s license is required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained for the duration of the candidate’s employment.
  • Valid NC Pesticide License or the ability to obtain one within 6 months of hire.
  • Valid Boating Safety Certificate or the ability to obtain one within 6 months of hire.

The position will be required to independently drive cars, trucks, pulling trailers, etc. regularly and should have the ability to do so safely. The position will also be required to operate a boat regularly.
