Opera Stage Manager

Job Description

Reporting to the Technical Production Manager, the Opera Stage Manager provides a professional and safe performance environment to the Peabody Institute students, faculty, staff, patrons and guests. This is a casual/as-needed position; hours are flexible and include daytime and evenings and weekends as appropriate to the staffing needs of the department.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Manages rehearsal/tech including production timekeeping.
  • Prepares call script and runs show.
  • Send out rehearsal and performance reports to appropriate personnel.
  • Maintain a working list of all show needs, props, scenery, costumes, etc, and communicate needs to appropriate personnel.
  • Identify crew needs for shows and help staff from students as needed.
  • Mentor student ASMs and ADs as needed.
  • Works in close partnership with the Opera Coordinator, the Technical Production Manager, and other members of the production team, conductors, artistic directors and students to support the event production, audio-visual, sound and curricular needs of the school in order to achieve an excellent production and a quality learning opportunity.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Ability to read music.
  • Professional demeanor, superior communication skills, comfort in high-pressure situations, adaptable, solutions-oriented problem solver.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills with proven ability to effectively prioritize workload.
  • Ability to work long hours and nontraditional shifts: evenings and weekends due to performance schedule.


Physical Requirements

  • Ability to walk, stand, climb for extended periods.
  • Ability to climb ladders and scaffolding.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Production (theatrical or event).
  • Three years related experience.
  • Additional experience may substitute for required education to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Three years technical experience in opera stage management, production, or related field.
  • Experience calling shows from a score.
