Job Description

J220501

Mentor: Dr. Jillian Richter, Department of Surgery

Postdoctoral Fellow in Vascular Biology and Trauma

A Postdoctoral Fellowship position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Jillian Richter within the Department of Surgery at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). We are seeking a highly motivated, enthusiastic and creative investigator in the field of vascular biology and endothelial cell glycobiology, focusing primarily on trauma-induced inflammation and coagulation research. The successful applicant would be expected to develop an independent research agenda leading to extramural funding, and ideally toward complete independence in 3-5 years of training. Salary will be commensurate with experience based on the Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award Stipend guidelines.

Dr. Richter’s extramurally-funded research program utilizes state-of-the-art molecular, cellular, and bioengineering techniques to evaluate the biological mechanisms linking endothelial glycocalyx damage to the development and progression of endotheliopathy that drives organ dysfunction after traumatic injury. The successful applicant is expected to implement a multidisciplinary approach to research that will involve working with small animal models of trauma-hemorrhage, bioengineered cell culture systems, and clinical/patient samples.

Primary responsibilities of this position include designing and performing experiments, analyzing and interpreting data, assisting other lab members and projects; applying for postdoctoral funding opportunities; writing and submitting manuscripts; and presenting at national or international meetings.

A background in vascular biology or glycobiology is highly desirable. Prior experience in animal handling, cell culture, and protein- and molecular-based assays is essential. Candidates with a Ph.D. in cell/molecular biology, immunology, physiology/pharmacology or a related discipline are encouraged to apply.

Enthusiastic and highly-motivated candidates should submit a CV, a cover letter detailing research experience, and contact information of three references to:
