North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking an applicant for a small animal internship position. The interests of the successful candidate will dictate the structure of the internship program. Possibilities include a more balanced general rotating program with time spent in internal medicine (8 to 12 weeks) and emergency (20 to 24 weeks), with specialty rotations through anesthesia, radiology, neurology, oncology, cardiology, and surgery (2 to 4 weeks each) OR a program more weighted towards internal medicine with time spent in internal medicine (30 to 31 weeks) and emergency (4 weeks), with specialty rotations through anesthesia, radiology, neurology, oncology, cardiology, and surgery (1-2 weeks each).
Four to six weeks of elective rotation time allow for optional rotations in other areas of interest for either program. Overall rotation weeks will be adjusted based on the start date of the program. Interns assume primary case management responsibility under the direct guidance and supervision of faculty service members.
Participation in clinical instruction of fourth year students is expected. Interns are responsible for after-hours emergency and intensive care duties on a rotating basis if they have the more balanced general program for approximately 10-12 weeks and are required to remain in the hospital during this time. Residents and faculty provide back-up coverage.
