Job Duties
Norfolk State University seeks an experienced office professional to be an integral part of the fast-paced day-to-day operations of the Office of Human Resources. The Professional Developmentand Training Specialist serves to provide strategic, innovative and operational leadership in the assessment, design, development and implementation of the University training and development programs.
Duties and responsibilities include:
1. Administers training and instruction in the areas of leadership development, manager and supervisortraining, departmental training, blended-learning and other professional development programs.
2. Enhances organizational workforce development by engaging departments and assessing training and development needs; assess and creates training models and programs which are offered on an ongoing, annual and continuum basis.
3. Facilitates, engages, and leads large groups in achieving training standards; assess knowledgeretention by evaluation methods; maintains training records for University staff and faculty.
4. Develops and administers various training via eLearning. Manages the elearning resources, including Virginia Learning Center; creates and manages account access and password resets.
5. Provide direct assistance as required to support the Employee Relations Manager.
6. Trains managers and supervisors in best employee relations and performance managementpractices and strategies.
7. May assist as needed with researching employeerelations issues, researching employment regulations and/or practices, collecting data and preparing reports, preparing corrective action letters, and grievance administration at the direction of the Employee Relations Manager.
Minimum Qualifications
1. Knowledge of general Human Resources practices and applicable State and
Federal laws and regulations.
2. Ability to think strategically, developing long-range training plans.
3. Ability to manage multiple assignments, adapt to changing priorities, organize and
prioritize work, and meet deadlines.
4. Ability to work accurately with detailed and confidential information.
5. Ability to compile and analyze data and present findings in a clear and concise manner.
6. Ability to exercise sound judgment and to make reasonable, logical and defensible decisions.
7. Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate, both orally and in writing, with all levels of staff displaying excellent customer service.
8. Must have exceptional computer skills to include experience utilizing Microsoft Word, Excel and Access.
9. Demonstrated experience working in a team environment with minimal supervision.
Additional Considerations
1. Experience with higher education human resources operations or prior experience with a Commonwealth of Virginia state agency.
2. Professional Human Resourcescertification (PHR) certification
