Job Description:
Southwest Virginia Community College (Southwest) offers career-training programs in numerous technical, industrial and medical fields at a reasonable cost, going so far as to even waive tuition for certain eligible students. Located in Richlands, Virginia, Southwest offers associate’s degrees in such fields as business, education, general studies, liberal arts and science. These degrees are primarily intended for students who wish to transfer to a four-year university. Southwest also offers associate’s degrees that feature programs intended to lead directly to a career in fields such as Nursing, Radiography and Administration of Justice.
The College is seeking a Director for its Upward Bound Programs. This position reports to the Dean of Student Services and is responsible for overseeing the Upward Bound Programs at Southwest. These programs are funded through the U. S. Department of Education to provide academic, career, and financial counseling to eligible high school students in grades 9 through 12 who are first generation students and meet the eligibility guidelines.
Job duties include:
- Provide leadership of Upward Bound and Upward Bound Math/Science Grant programs;
- Responsible for budgetary and program compliance with EDGAR regulations;
- Provide services to project participants;
- Maintain positive relationships with participatory schools;
- Assist with the implementation and supervision of activities, events, field trips, college visits, and summer academic program.
- Participate in the grant writing process to secure funds and design programs/projects in established TRIO Upward Bound and Upward Bound Math/Science program serving disadvantaged populations in high school age group.
- Insure the maintenance of accurate database information and to compile and analyze data for reports.
- Hire, train, and supervise staff for the Programs
These programs employ staff who have succeeded in overcoming barriers similar to those of the project’s target population.
Master’s degree in counseling, education, psychology or related field
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Must be able to successfully complete a background check

Minimum of 5 years experience in educational support services or administration of similar projects or understanding of educational needs of disadvantaged student populations
Familiarity with EDGAR and TRIO programs
